About the Course

The story of the human occupation of Sri Lanka starts right from the arrrival of Homo erectus around 1.2 million years ago. Homo denisova followed around 100 thousand years ago and Homo sapiens around 70,000 years ago. The Bronze Age also made its appearance here as did the Iron age though very selectively. Civilisation happened very early in Sri Lanka and much later in Southeast Asia. Most of the early civilisations of Southeast Asia were heavily influenced by India, be it the Palas in Burma or the Pallavas in Cambodia. The Cholas also made major inroads into this region leaving behind a very solid mark. Sinicisation had its own impacts but indicsation had the much larger one. The impact of Idicisation was very strong in Sri Lanka and Burma/Myanmar and areduced one in Laos, Cambodia, and Indonesia. It played a much smaller role in Vietnam, Malaysia and the Phillipines and virtually zero in Papua New Guinea.
